About the Creator
My name if you haven’t figured out is Phil Oliveira; I live in Providence, where I am the Assistant Director for Residence Life at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) . I have been drawing as long as I can remember, It started in kindergarten where I would try to make my own books, then as I grew older and got into high school I would illustrate my notes (basing the drawings on what ever the discussion was in class… you have no Idea how often that saved my ass). When it was time to go to college the logical choice was illustration. I had dreams at the time of becoming a Disney Animator, Later I’d find out that maybe that wasn’t for me. I now hold 2 degrees in art, one in Illustration and one in New Media.
Comics have always been a big part of my life; my first comic character was Elmo the hyperactive poodle… He was really just a Calvin knock off; I think I was maybe in the 6th grade when I came up with him. I did the first strip on a large piece of poster board. Then Came Joe. That Strip was half homework half a gift for my friends. I tried to make it go somewhere, but it just wasn’t as funny(too many inside jokes made it hard for outsiders to follow). Around the end of Joe I came up with Ogden and Canned Ham was born… We’re already doing much better than Joe and I don’t think there is any stopping me now! Thanks for coming along on the adventure.
